"Slices of the Earth"
These paintings are about some of the earth's formations -- hills,
mounds, rocks, strata, organic and inorganic matter. The paintings
are emotional responses to visual sensations that occur from the result of
erosion and the quality of light.
Translucent and transparent layers of paint are combined with charcoal
drawing on carefully prepared linen canvas. The technique is
deliberately slow in an attempt to reflect the evolving process of the
subject matter itself.
From the prehistoric past, forms merge mysteriously with the present in
visually sensual and tactile ways. |

| The painting, Voluminous Hill and White Strata,
exemplifies the sensual and tactile quality I speak of. Here is a
rocky hillside combined with organic matter and the featured white strata,
which moves rhythmically and mysteriously through the composition.
As I was working on this painting (and others in the series), I recalled
previous paintings of mine that focused on the female nude, and I began to
view much of this landscape subject matter as an extension of the human
form. |

| Despite the erosion and ever changing appearance of the
earth's surface, there remains a sense of permanence as seen in Blue Mesa with Light, Floating Cloud,
showing solid earth formations with various dark shades of blue, black and
umber in sharp contrast to the light, airy sky above, and the elusive, floating rain cloud
which passes and dissolves so quickly. |
